If you asked any serious football fan in 2006/2007 who they would choose in their midfield to hustle, chase and shackle opposing attacking players, nine times out of ten, they would say Gennaro Gattuso. In his prime, almost no one could beat him, and when they did, it took something special. Like Ronaldinho in 2006, or Gerrard in 2005. The list of Gattuso's scalps is endless, a list that includes one Cristiano Ronaldo in 2005 and 2007. That says something.
For any striker to score the winning goal in a tightly contested game is the epitome of what it is all about. Coming off the bench with only 4 minutes to play, and scoring two goals within the space of 30-odd official seconds is downright extraordinary. The fact that Huntelaar was able to pull out a finish such as his second from his vast array of party tricks defies logic.
In the 2009/2010 installment of the UEFA Champion's League, no game will be bigger (atleast in the group stages) than AC Milan versus Real Madrid. Sixteen shared trophies, nine for Real, seven for Milan, says it all. To make things so much more juicier, Real Madrid were finally able to pry away Milan's crown jewel; Kaka'. 63 Million Euro does that. They say money buys success, but not in football.
After matchday six of the 2009/2010 Serie A campaign, it is safe to say Milan are in crisis. Standing eleventh on the table is one thing, but only scoring three goals (the third worst scoring record in the league) is an absolute disgrace.
Only a week ago, AC Milan were in crisis. An unconvicing win against Siena, dismal display against Inter and a luckless draw against Livorno has left the tifosi wanting answers. Ronaldinho was employed by Leonardo to push the squad forward towards victory, providing the missing link between midfield and attack. Instead, Ronaldinho has enjoyed a lacklustre start to the season, joining in when it suits him, without having any sort of influence or desire to succeed. Enter Clarence Seedorf.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has recently coe out in an interview with Sport.it and blatantly stated that he "now expects a lot of room to move, and hopefully a starting place." This does not necessarily mean that Leonardo will start him however.
Lets look at the facts though;
1. Milan are playing Livorno.
2. Livorno lost to Napoli 3-1 last week.
3. Huntelaar is Milan's hot new signing, and scored more than 9 goals in 4 years. Livorno's hot new signing is Mozart - who scored 9 goals in 4 years.
4. Milan are playing Livorno.
If van Basten's word is anything to go by, then Real Madrid will be kicking themselves by the end of this season. In a recent interview the Diavoli legend stated that "[Huntelaar] had always scored, and I believe, and hope, he will do plenty [at Milan] too".
